Europa Universalis IV
2013 · Paradox Development Studio
Has it aged?Why ↓
Europa Universalis IV is historical grand strategy played across a world map: you govern a country between 1444 and 1821, pursuing power through trade, diplomacy, colonisation and war. The attraction is deciding how an empire should grow; the obstacle is learning an interface that makes even getting started hard work.
Rule your land and dominate the world with unparalleled freedom, depth and historical accuracy. Write a new history of the world and build an empire for the ages.

The verdict
Play it if learning a complicated system is part of your pleasure, not an admission fee you resent. Choosing how to build a country's influence gives Europa Universalis IV more appeal than conquest alone: trade and diplomacy belong beside war, rather than beneath it. The interface is a serious barrier, but the strategic possibilities justify the study.
Play it if
You enjoy studying strategy games outside the game itself. You want to steer a country rather than an individual ruler, and deciding between trade, diplomacy and military expansion sounds more satisfying than fighting every battle yourself.
Skip it if
You need an interface you can understand through casual experimentation, or expect to start making informed decisions without substantial learning. If studying tutorials feels like unpaid work, this is the wrong empire to run.
Common questions
- What period does an Europa Universalis IV campaign cover?
- The game's historical span is 1444–1821. You control a country and shape its influence through trade, diplomacy, colonisation and war.
- What does the Europa Universalis IV expansion subscription include?
- Introduced in 2021 and documented again in 2024, it provides access to the game's DLC backlog. It requires the base game; the subscription does not replace it.
- Can I carry my Crusader Kings III world into Europa Universalis IV?
- A fan-made converter documented in 2020 creates an Europa Universalis IV starting scenario from a Crusader Kings III save, translating countries, cultures, religions and other world details. It approximates your world rather than transferring every rule exactly.
