Has it aged?Why ↓

Tengami is a pop-up-book puzzle adventure set in fairytale Japan. You guide a paper man collecting flowers to revive a dying tree, folding paths and pulling tabs through illustrated scenery. Moving the paper is the pleasure; the slow walks between puzzles make you wish you could simply turn the page.

Tengami is an atmospheric adventure game set inside a Japanese pop-up book. Fold and slide the beautifully crafted paper world to solve puzzles and discover secrets.

Skip Tengami as a puzzle adventure: its folding scenery deserves cleverer problems. Rearranging stairways gives the paper a purpose, but counting symbols and operating wind chimes rarely justify the format. David Wise's music and the illustrated landscapes are the stronger reasons to play. Treat it as a small artwork with interruptions, not a satisfying afternoon of deduction.

Play it if

You linger over illustrated books, notice paper textures, and sometimes play chiefly to listen to the music. You would happily explore pagodas and cherry blossom without needing a difficult puzzle at every stop.

Skip it if

You abandon adventures when backtracking means watching a character slowly retrace the same route, or when simple puzzles leave you feeling underoccupied. Tengami makes both central to its short journey.

How does folding Tengami's scenery work?
You interact with tabs and pages to alter the landscape, including folding sections of stairway into a usable route. Some interactions require the paper man to reach a glowing spot first; you cannot freely reshape everything.
Does restoring the tree lead to much of a story?
The quest is to collect flowers and restore the tree's blossom. Beyond that, there is little narrative and only a few haikus about passing seasons; don't expect the book to unfold into a character-driven tale.
Can I turn off the glowing puzzle prompts?
The 2015 PC review reports that disabling Hints still leaves pulsating circles marking interactions. That limits how much you can discover unaided.
Is mouse control a good fit for the pop-up book?
Touch is the better fit for sliding tabs and turning pages. The 2015 PC version retains a standard Windows pointer that becomes a hyperlink hand over interactive elements, rather than an interface redesigned around the mouse.
How long does the tree-restoration journey take?
Allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours: the 2014 touchscreen review reports the shorter duration, and the 2015 PC review estimates the longer one.
