Wuppo

2016 · Knuist & Perzik

Has it aged?Why ↓

Wuppo is a hand-drawn platform adventure where you play a nameless hotel nuisance thrown into the jungle. You jump pits, fight bosses and search for a way home, but the better adventure is learning to live among the Wums: cleaning hotel rooms, making friends and queuing for roller coasters.

Play as an exiled 'wum' looking for a new home in this bizarre but charming world, filled with strange creatures, puzzles, monsters and political chaos.

Play it for the hotel residents and theme-park detours, not just the bosses. Making friends actually increases your maximum health; getting to know this world is part of getting stronger, rather than decoration between fights. Choose the Definitive Edition: the 2019 update adjusted the difficulty curve and added couch co-op. Wuppo's willingness to make you wait your turn at a roller coaster is exactly the sort of eccentricity worth preserving.

Play it if

You investigate optional attractions, talk to everyone in a hotel and enjoy games that reward kindness with something more tangible than a thank-you. You would happily interrupt a platforming adventure to explore Wondersplenk's minigames.

Skip it if

You need a tightly directed succession of fights and upgrades, and would stop playing when asked to clean hotel rooms or stand in a roller-coaster queue.

Why is my health called happiness?
Happiness is Wuppo's health system. Making friends, watching new filmstrips and eating your favourite food can increase your maximum health, so socialising and exploring have practical benefits.
Does Wuppo follow the usual Metroidvania upgrade loop?
Only partly: its opening involves collecting items, platforming and bosses, but returning to the hotel leads to a broader adventure built around helping residents and finding a train ticket to the big city. Don't expect new traversal tools to be its main attraction.
Who does the second player control?
The Definitive Edition's 2019 update added couch co-op with the second player controlling Denksnavel. They can help with bosses and searching for curiosities.
Do I have to visit Wondersplenk?
No: the theme park is optional, with side quests, minigames and roller coasters. Riding the coasters grants a happiness bonus, but you have to queue first.
